Addressing a gap in the town - the Connecting Communities Collective opened up Re_Store on George Street, in the heart of Oban in Spring 2024. We are proud that Re_Store is "more than a charity shop".
It operates as a community hub. It brings people together, promotes sustainability in real practical ways and shares information about local activities and the work of our charity partners. In our workshop space, we teach skills and help local people to build confidence.
Great news to share!!! COMMUNITY BUYOUT SUCCESS!!!
The Oban and District Development Trust application to the Scottish Land Fund, to buy the shop building and carry out some essential repairs was successful!
Being able to buy the shop building from the private landlord safeguards the future of Re_Store and mean that any surplus rental income is spent locally in the community.
This means Hope Kitchen (in partnership with the Connecting Communities Collective) can lease the building as long as they want, and the rent paid will be reinvested back into community projects.
The ODDT are hosting a community gathering to talk more about what community ownership means on Oct 30th at the Rockfield Centre, 7pm - 8.30pm, all welcome.
Oban and District Development Trust is a new organisation that will be an important and exciting vehicle for community, economic, cultural and environmental development in the Oban area. ODDT will do this by creating new opportunities, developing existing ideas and giving voice and support to positive initiatives that better Oban and North Argyll. Please add your name to this form
The new Trust will be building Community Wealth. In this, one of the core principles is the community ownership of land and property. Through the National Lottery's Scottish Land Fund, we can apply for a grant to buy the shop that Re_Store currently operates from, on Oban’s George Street. The lease for the building is currently held by Hope Kitchen - this new opportunity will see the purchase led by the new development trust with support from The Resource Collective.
