Come Rescue food at Re_store

Saving food waste from landfill

Open to everyone, our Rescued Food Project collects food from a variety of local shops and supermarkets near the end of its shelf life, that would otherwise be destined for landfill. This food is then made available in our shop from 11am-1pm each day, for a suggested donation of £2 a bag.

Run by Volunteers

Huge thanks to the wonderful team of local folk who do the food pick-ups, set it all out on the shelves and in fridges and freezers and run the project on the day. What a great crew we have! If you have a bit of time to spare and can help us, please let our Coordinator Sarah know- we always welcome new volunteers: 07720 636114

Save your money and save the planet! What's not to love!

Multiple Benefits

Environmental Benefits:

  • Reduces landfill waste: Food waste in landfills decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
  • Conserves resources: Producing food requires significant resources like water, land, and energy. Minimizing food waste means less of these resources are wasted.
  • Reduces transportation emissions: Transporting food to landfills also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. By reducing waste, we can lessen the burden on the transportation system.

Social Benefits:

  • Addresses food insecurity: Surplus food can be redistributed to food banks, charities, and community organizations, providing vital meals to those facing food poverty.
  • Supports vulnerable communities: By ensuring that surplus food reaches people in need, we can help alleviate hunger and improve the well-being of individuals and families.
  • Promotes community resilience: Food rescue efforts can strengthen community bonds by connecting businesses with local charities and organizations.

Economic Benefits:

  • Reduces costs for businesses: Donating surplus food can be a more cost-effective way for businesses to manage excess inventory than throwing it away.
  • Saves consumers money: Surplus food at discounted prices can help consumers save money on groceries.
  • Promotes a circular economy: Food rescue contributes to a more sustainable and efficient food system, where resources are used to their full potential.
